Chronic pancreatitis is a condition in which the patient experiences chronic or intermittent severe abdominal pain, due to a chronic and continuous inflammatory process that gradually destroys the pancreas, either totally or partially. The presence of stones, cysts, increased lobularity, dilated ducts, and calcification are typical signs of chronic pancreatitis. Blood levels of pancreatic enzymes are normal or mildly elevated. Over time, the organ gradually loses its functions and the patient may end up with complications such as diabetes and malabsorption syndrome. Alcohol abuse, gallbladder stones, autoimmune disorders, and trauma are the known causes of chronic pancreatitis, while in some patients the cause remains unknown. Standard treatment includes pain management, prevention and treatment of known causes, treatment of organ failure or failure, and surgery.
Ayurvedic herbal medicines can be used very effectively in chronic pancreatitis to reduce pain and prevent or minimize long-term irreversible damage to the organ. Herbal medications can reduce inflammation in the pancreas and thus prevent long-term complications such as cyst formation and calcification. Treatment may change depending on the known cause of the condition. It is advisable to start Ayurvedic treatment as soon as possible, as this can lead to complete reversal of inflammation and complete healing. Even patients with a chronic history and visible damage to the pancreas have fully recovered without recurrence. Children with recurrent pancreatitis also do well with Ayurvedic treatment and fully recover with treatment. Any recent episode of pain can usually be successfully treated with Ayurvedic medications, with very few exceptions. Most patients who tend to relapse or who do not respond well to treatment tend to have a history of noncompliance with treatment, inadequate control of diet, and a tendency to binge on fatty foods and alcohol. The average treatment time for chronic pancreatitis is about eight months, depending on the severity of organ damage and response to treatment. Therefore, Ayurvedic herbal treatment is a viable treatment option for chronic and recurrent pancreatitis. Early treatment can prevent irreversible damage and achieve full recovery, with minimal chance of recurrence.
