  • Disease treatment description

Ichthyosis is a medical condition of the skin in which there is an abnormal differentiation or metabolism of the epidermis, the upper layer of the skin.  This condition can be either inherited or acquired and usually consists of five different types: vulgaris, lamellar, congenital, x -- linked, and epidermolytic hyperkeratosis.  Ichthyosis is characterized by excessive scaling of the skin which is more prominent over the trunk, abdomen, buttocks and legs.  The modern treatment of this condition is usually with a continuous application of moisturerisers and lubricating ointments.

The Ayurvedic herbal treatment for ichthyosis is aimed at giving symptomatic treatment for this scaling on the skin as well as using Ayurvedic herbal medicines to treat the root cause of the condition, so that this condition can be treated on a more permanent basis.  Local application on the dry skin can be in the form of medicated oils and herbal ointments and pastes which provide lubrication and a soothing action on the skin.  Affected individuals are also asked to consume oils in different forms such as medicated oils and medicated ghee.  This provides lubricating nourishment both externally as well as internally.

In addition to providing symptomatic treatment, the unique aspect of Ayurvedic treatment is that ichthyosis can be treated at the micro-cellular level so as to treat the abnormal differentiation or metabolism of the epidermis.  Ayurvedic herbal medicines which act on the microcirculation providing nourishment to the cells of the epidermis are used judiciously, so that these medicines act on the epidermis cells and gradually correct the abnormal differentiation of the cells.  This treatment helps to reduce the speed of scaling of the skin, and gradually brings the condition to tolerable levels, so that the affected individuals can carry on day-to-day activities without a significant hindrance due to the excessive scaling and thickening of skin.  Depending upon the severity and type of ichthyosis, affected individuals may need treatment from about 6 to12 months, in order to significantly improve from this condition.
