  • Disease treatment description

An underactive bladder (UAB) is a medical condition in which an affected person is unable to void urine normally; this may include hesitancy to start the stream, a poor or intermittent stream, or sensations of incomplete bladder emptying. Impaired detrusor muscle contractility can be one cause of this condition. An underactive bladder as well as impaired detrusor contractility may result from neurological disease, metabolic disease (e.g. diabetes), chronic bladder outlet obstruction (e.g. obstructive BPH or complications of anterior vaginal surgery), cognitive decline (such as with aging), psychiatric disorders, and adverse effects of medications.

Therapy for UAB is often dependent on factors such as age, health, symptoms, and cause of the condition. Treatment frequently includes lifestyle modification (fluid restriction, bladder retraining). Bethanechol is a prescription medication used for treatment; bethanechol can stimulate the nerves of the bladder, making them more responsive to stimulus. With UAB, it is common for patients to utilize a catheter to void.

While treating the main causative factor/s is required to solve this distressing condition, most often it is easier said than done. Ayurvedic herbal medicines can be judiciously utilized to treat neurological and metabolic diseases as well as to reverse surgical damage to muscle and nerves. Herbal medicines can strengthen both the bladder muscles as well as the nerves supplying them. While catheterization may solve the issue immediately, it can have long term complications like recurrent infection and delaying of natural bladder emptying.

It is therefore important to remove the catheter as soon as bladder voiding is possible, even partially. Medicines can help in normalizing voiding function though it may take anywhere from one to three months for the same. The first few days after catheter removal can be very distressing and frustrating for the affected patient; however, normal voiding is usually achieved within four to six weeks. Continuation of Ayurvedic treatment, and patience and perseverance do help in finally achieving long term bladder voiding independent of catheterization or medicines.
